As opposed to what the media might want you to believe, the online world isn’t full of ‘selfie-obsessed millennials.’ If fact, more people of all ages are online than ever before, which is why the content you create must resonate with multiple generations.
To understand the habits of each generation, Buzzstream conducted a survey and split the responses into three separate groups:
- Millennials (born between 1977–1995)
- Generation X (born between 1965–1976)
- Baby Boomers (born between 1946–1964)
As each generation has unique expectations, values and experiences that influence consumer behaviours, your offering should connect with each of them, and inspire them to take action.
Here’s how to maximise your reach to all three generations:
1. Most content is consumed between 8pm – midnight
Across all three generations, the majority of content is consumed between 8pm – midnight. With the Baby Boomers consuming the most content online.
To maximise your reach, schedule your posts during this timeframe.
2. Blog articles are the preferred content type
The top four content types preferred by all generations are; blog articles, images, comments, and eBooks. With blog articles rated as significantly more favourable compared with other content types.
The least favourite amongst all groups are; flipbooks, SlideShares, webinars, and white papers.
To maximise your reach, make sure you have a robust blog content strategy in place.
3. Facebook is the preferred content sharing platform
Facebook remains the most popular content sharing platform and is used by 60% of respondents in each generation.
To maximise your reach, utilise Facebook as a way to get your brand and products noticed through shareable content and imagery.
Although marketing to several generations can be a challenge, the above insights demonstrate there are ways to maximise your reach and create content that multiple generations will want to share.
